Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Colorado Hook and Needle Society! We are an inclusive, passionate group of creators who love to share our skills and knowledge with the community. Join our meet-ups to learn, connect, and stitch together. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced fiber artist, there's a place for you in our group.

Q: What do you do during your meetings?

A: We try to schedule at least one free stitch and one demo each month. At free stitch meet-ups, we chat while working on our own projects. This is a great time to get help with something you're stuck on or for beginners to get instruction. During demo meet-ups, attendees still visit and often work on their own projects, but the meeting will start with a group member demonstrating a particular skill, technique, or craft. Don't worry, these demos are entirely voluntary -- you don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with!

Q: When do you meet?

A: We currently meet at least twice a month. Meeting dates and times will vary, so check this site and/or our social media accounts regularly for updates.

Q: Where do you meet?

A: We meet at the Smoky Hill Library at 5430 S Biscay Circle in Centennial, Colorado. Specific location within the library varies depending on meeting room availability, so check our Facebook for updates or check with the concierge when you arrive at the library.

Q: Do I need to register or RSVP to attend?

A: Nope! However, it helps us reserve an appropriately-sized meeting room and bring enough supplies for projects if you RSVP via our Facebook

Q: How much does it cost?

A: It's free! No registration fees or membership dues.

Q: Is it really okay if I bring my kids?

A: Of course! Your kids can play in the children's area of the library or hang with us in the meeting room. Our society does include some school-age members who create along with us.

Q: What textile arts are included in the society?

A: We started as a crochet club and expanded when we realized our members were skilled in a wide variety of fiber arts: crochet, knitting, embroidery (e.g, slow stitching, cross stitch, and needlepoint), bobbin lace, drop spinning, hand sewing, etc. If it's easily portable and includes fiber of some sort, it counts!

Q: Why don't I see machine sewing on the above list?

A: Unfortunately, our meeting space usually can't accommodate the space and/or power needs of sewing machines. We also don't want to encroach into the territory of the well-established sewing and quilting groups in the area.

Q: Do you offer any classes?

A: We don't currently provide any formal instruction beyond scheduled society meet-ups, but we're collaborating with the Arapahoe library system to offer crochet and knitting classes in the near future.

Q: Can you help me learn [insert fiber art here]?

A: No guarantees, but we can probably show you the basics! To ensure you attend the same meet-up as someone skilled in what you want to learn, email coloradohookandneedle@gmail.com before attending a meet-up.

Q: When was your society first established?

Colorado Hook & Needle Society started as the Crochet Club of Aurora Colorado in 2024. We quickly realized that most members were skilled in multiple textile arts, so the group was expanded to encompass all easily portable fiber crafts.

The goal is to create a free space in the community where anyone can learn, share, and discuss project ideas. So many people want to learn and create their own unique projects.  Online resources are abundant for people wanting to learn and create their own unique projects, but it's always great to have an in-person group to connect with and learn from as well.
